Saving for a rainy day

Hands up if you have a creek running past your office building?

This delightful waterway runs from Warrane down to Gordons Hill Road, past the Government buildings and behind Eastlands.

In heavy rains, like those we had in May 2018, it comes close to breaking its banks.

We know that such weather events are becoming more frequent and more severe.

Hobart City Council had a significant unfunded repair bill to pay after the floods in May.

It makes sense to plan for such events by establishing a fund for repair work following extreme weather events.

We should also be identifying vulnerable areas where there’ve been problems in past storms and planning a series of mitigation works.
